Original Polish Poster Wielka Ucieczkadrawn by Wiktor Gorka in 1967 for the American film The Great Escape directed in 1963 by John Sturges with Steve McQueen.

This original Polish poster was designed by Wiktor Gorka in 1967. The American film The Great Escape (Wielka Ucieczka in Polish) was directed in 1963 by John Sturges with Steve Mc Queen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough and James Coburn in the lead roles. According to Paul Brickhill's true story, the film is based on the mass escape from the Stalag Luft III prison camp in Sagan (now Zagan in Poland) during the Second World War.

Very popular and one of the most profitable films of the year, the film will win Mc Queen the prize for best actor at the Moscow International Film Festival, as stated at the top of the poster: "amerycansky film sensacyjny nagrodzony na MFF w Moskwie", "sensational American film awarded at the Moscow International Film Festival". It is also usual for poster artists in Poland to specify the genre of the film.

Gorka is considered one of the most outstanding representatives of the Polish school of poster art, a term coined in 1960 to refer to a group of Polish artists who have gained international recognition. Although they are stylistically very diverse, these posters have several notable points in common: innovative typography, economy of form, conciseness and boldness (some will also speak of irony). Speaking of the Polish poster, director Martin Scorsese says that "often the cinema posters in Poland managed to synthesize the entire film into their works".

This poster is a very good example of the Polish style: the plot is materialized by 5 silhouettes of characters in green monochrome. You can tell that they are soldiers by their minimalist attributes (buttons and milestones on their jackets); going and running each in a different direction you instinctively understand the idea of escape; and finally the cult motorcycle chase scene is materialized by the two black circles symbolizing the Triumph Trophy TR6 driven by Steve McQueen. The "agitated" composition and the accumulation of different typographies makes the whole thing particularly dynamic.
