Original poster "Monte Carlo" by Jean-Gabriel Domergue, circa 1950

This original poster by Jean Gabriel Domergue was produced in the 1950s for Monte Carlo, one of the Monegasque districts.

Domergue, Toulouse-Lautrec's little cousin, was a famous French painter and engraver of the 20th century, winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1913. A great collector, he was also curator of the Jacquemart-André Museum.

He calls himself "the inventor of the pin-up": the Parisian woman is his favourite subject. His works, inspired by Degas and Boldini, are characterized by the long slender neck he gives his models, their shy look and their great elegance.

This poster is quite representative of her style: a young blonde woman with red lips, visibly naked, delicately carries a very large bouquet of colourful flowers on her shoulder. She seems to complete the bouquet, her body being an extension of the delicate blue background, both in shape and colour.
