Original poster of the airline Air France for the flight Paris Tokyo, signed in 1952 by Tabuchi

This original Air France airline poster designed by Tabuchi in 1952 announces the Paris-Tokyo route.

It depicts a geisha in a traditional patterned kimono, standing amidst stylized blue flowers. The term geisha refers to women who dedicate their lives to traditional Japanese arts and use their talents to entertain special guests. Behind her is the famous Mount Fuji on the right, and the Japanese capital on the left.

The old spelling "Tokio" was used in French at the beginning of the XX e century, and is still used in German, Dutch and Spanish.

The traditional plane that often flies over the landscapes of the Air France countryside stands out clearly against the dark red background of the poster.

Active in France from 1951 until his death, Yasse Tabuchi was a is a 20th century Japanese watercolour painter, engraver, lithographer and ceramist. Influenced by surrealism, his works stand out for their symbolic power.
